ABOUT

Doing XR Better is a collective of disabled and abled rebels. We believe that Extinction Rebellion (XR) is our current best hope of driving system change on a scale needed to combat the climate crisis - a crisis that will disproportionately impact the vulnerable. However we believe that XR inevitably - as a product of society - reflects conscious and unconscious bias and ableism. It can and should do better.

We support non-violent direct action as a way of achieving system change. The purpose of large scale direct action is to be disruptive. It is an inevitable consequence of disruption that there will be real and negative consequences for some, which we accept. However we must also acknowledge that disruption will impact the most vulnerable more severely. Action impact on marginalised groups should be considered in action design at the design stage, and mitigation put in place where possible. We must carry the most vulnerable with us in our actions, or our rebellion does not deserve to survive.

We will also look at how the movement can be more inclusive. The best way of having a good understanding of impact on marginalised groups is to have a plurality of voices from those groups front and centre.

XR is flawed, but there is no perfect movement out there just waiting to happen. So - do this, but do it better.
